Institution feedback and learner response

Feedback

WWW:
  • Effective starter activity as it was visual and lead to paired discussions

Media Institutions

BBC

The BBC was founded by John Reith in 1922. It is one of the worlds oldest national broadcasting organisation which is funded by the residents in the UK.  It is a public service broadcaster (PSB) and is paid for by license fees.  The BBC remit; to inform, educate and entertain.  BBC has other channels such as BBC2, BBC3, BBC4 and radio stations which promote each other through advertisements. BBC has also expanded onto the internet  with BBC iplayer.  

Twitter

Founded in 2006 by Jack Dorsey.  It allows you to tweet, retweet, forward another tweet and reply to a tweet.  It has 300 million users.  Twitter is a user generated content (UGC) this means it is controlled by the public.  It provides audience feedback and allows them to interact with news reporters.  Synergy; youtube vine.

News Corporation

Founded in Australia by Rupert Murdoch. It is one of the highest earning companies and a huge conglomerate. It splits into two, one being the news corp, which handles the newspapers and magazines etc. And the 21st century fox, which handles the TV and film side. Synergy; the times uses this to promote each other and itself. 

Disney

Founded by Walt Disney.  Disney is a huge conglomerate and is famous for its fairytales, most famous for the creation of Mickey mouse. Synergy; Walt Disney Pictures, Hollywood records, Disney Land, Disney Live, and the Disney Store. It also did some collaborations with pixar, who specialise in Computer generated imagery (CGI).

ITV

First launched in 1955. Biggest commercially funded programme. They are controlled and regulated by ofcom. Since the merger ITV has expanded its family of channels with the launch of ITV2 in 1998, ITV3 in 2004, ITV4 in 2005 and CITV in 2006. Following the Television Act of 1954 which made commercial television in the UK possible, ITV first began broadcasting in 1955 on Channel 3. The Broadcasting Act of 1990 allowed regional companies, under specific conditions, to merge for the first time. It paved the way for the consolidation of ITV and the first merger took place in 1994 when Granada bought LWT. 


Sony

It was founded in 1946 by Akio Morita and Masaru Ibuka. Sony is a is a multinational conglomerate, in Japan. Sony is famous for Sony Pictures, Music, Computer Entertainment and Sony Mobile Communications. Sony own Columbia Pictures, which is their biggest acievement so far.

Vivendi


Vivendi is a French digital entertainment comapny. It owns Canal+ Group, which is a TV channel and movie producer in France. The water company Compagnie Générale des Eaux, branched out into transport, construction, property.  In the 1990s, they then changed the name to Vivendi and launched digital channels in other countries as they expanded their company. 

Viacom
Viacom is a company based in America, who focuses on cinema and cable TV. It is the 6th largest broadcasting and cable company. National Amusements has voting control over Viacom. Viacom was produced from CBS Corporation. Synergy; signed a contract with Microsoft allowed both Microsoft and Viacom to advertise each other. Microsoft also collaborate on promotions with the BET and MTV awards, which are also owned by Viacom. Viacom also owns DreamWorks.

MIGRAIN introduction to Media: Reading an image







ReeBok Advertisement 


Denotation; This advert is a celebrity endorsement by 50 cent, promoting the sports brand ReeBok.

Colour;  The whole poster is monochrome, which may reflect the rappers dark past. It also creates quite a serious mood/atmosphere. 

Pose; He is looking directly at the audience (direct mode of address). He himself is standing with his back to the other side of the image, which shows his fingerprints. This may connote that he is leaving his past behind him. However, you could also argue that because he is standing so upright he maybe proud of his past, which is supported by the tagline 'i am what i am'. 

Composition; Both him and the picture of his fingerprints take up the same amount of space. This could suggest that his past, being that he has a criminal record, has made him who he is today. The copy (serif font) is quite interesting as 'i am' is on one side of the image, showing 50 cent, and the other side with 'what i am', showing his fingerprints. 

Type of shot; This image is a medium/close up shot, still showing the emotions on his face but at the same time showing the image of his criminal record. 

Subject matter; There is no product being advertised in this poster, meaning the aim of this poster is to promote the brand. ReeBok used 50 cent to advertise the idea that whatever may of happened in the past ReeBok can help you stand out and be proud of who you are.

Lighting; The poster is very dark, again suggesting his 'dark' past.

Target audience; Mainly youths, we know this because of the use of 50 cent promoting the brand. Youngsters are instantly drawn to this poster because of 50 cent.


The dominate reading could be that audiences are inspired by 50 cents words (at the top right of the advertisement) and look up to 50 cent, see him as a role model to young people. The clear message to readers is that no matter your mistakes in life you can still succeed in life, just like 50 cent has. The oppositional reading could be that ReeBok could be promoting criminal or bad behaviour. Also, this could be a commodification of black culture being used by a capitalist company. In addition, this could then reinforce stereotypes of black people.  






Marc Jacobs advertisement

Denotation; this print is advertising the fragrance 'Daisy', which is produced by Marc Jacobs.

Colour; the colours used is mainly yellowy- green which gives a summery, glowing element to the image.

Framing/Composition; the image is kind of split into three sections, one being the logo and the name of the fragrance, then in the middle we have the woman who is holding the oversized perfume bottle, which is in the third half of the image.

Pose; There is direct mode of address. Also, the way she is looking at the audience, draws you in as she looks very intriguing. In addition, she has an element of innocence about her, they have chosen not to put any make-up or fancy clothing on her to portray that this product is very simplistic.

Type of shot; this shot is a medium shot, to show not only the product but the atmosphere surrounding it.

Setting; this shot has been taken outdoors. I think they have done this to capture nature as the product is very simplistic.

Subject matter; I think the subject matter is both the girl and the perfume bottle. The perfume bottle is oversized, which may suggest that the perfume is as important as the person who wears it. 

Lighting; this image is quite bright, I think they have done this to symbolise youthfulness. Also, the sun behind her is shining quite bright, which gives the audience a taste of summer. 

The target audience is women. Although this advert is very simple, I think the aim is to make women feel that their 'natural' self is very beautiful, to almost show that you don't have to be over the top and wear a powerful perfume as sometimes "less is more".
  
The dominant reading could be that this perfume is one for simplistic lovers and that natural things are beautiful. However, the oppositional reading could be that Marc Jacobs are saying that every woman should look like this natural girl on the poster, which may make some girls insecure.

Media Consumption


Magazines
  • What magazines (if any) do you buy regularly?  Why
Grazia, hello, vouge.
  • What sections of the magazines do you read and not read, and why?
I mainly read about the latest fashion trends, celebrity gossip. I also enjoy reading my horoscope, which some magazines feature at the back.  
Television
  • Approximately how many hours a week do you spend watching television?
15 hours a week
  • What times of day do you usually watch television?
After school between 5-8pm
  • What programmes do you like best and why?
I like to watch TV series /reality programmes like TOWIE, Made in Chelsea/ dramas such as Pretty Little Liars and the vampire diaries. 
  • Do you watch alone or with others? If you watch with others, who decides what you will watch?
I mainly watch TV by myself. However, sometimes I watch it with my family. 
  • Do you watch 'live' TV or on-demand/catch-up? Do you use any other devices to watch TV (such as laptop of tablet?)
I mainly record my TV programmes or watch them on-demand. Sometimes I watch things on my laptop.
Radio
  • Do you listen to the radio?
Yes, I do.
  • If yes, what stations do you like best and why?
I like to listen to capital, kiss, heart.  
  • Approximately how many hours a week do you spend listening to the radio?
7 hours a week.
  • What times of the day do you usually listen to the radio?
It depends, because I tend to listen to it in the car, so whenever I'm in the car. 
  • Where do you listen to the radio?
I listen to the radio mainly when I'm in the the car. Also, it is normally on in the background while I'm at home.

Cinema
  • What films have you seen in the cinema in the last month?
In the last month, I have only been to the cinema once to watch Paper towns.
  • What films have you seen in other places – for example, through rental, satellite film channels (free or otherwise) or through video-on-demand?
In the last month, I have watched some films on rental like Lets be cops, the rest I tend to just watch on Netflix.
  • Who else watched the films with you?
I normally watch films with my friends and sometimes with my family. I don't tend to watch films by myself.
  • Who decided what films to watch?
We usually come to a mutual agreement on what to watch. 
  • What devices do you typically use to watch films: TV, laptop, tablet, phone etc.?
Normally, I watch films on Netflix either on the TV or on my laptop.
Online
  • How often do you access the internet?
I access the internet daily.
  • Where do you access the internet?  At home, at college or school, or at work?
I use the internet when I'm at home, school, basically everywhere I go. 
  • What are the main sites that you access?
I use social media apps such as WhatsApp, Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr. I also use the tfl bus times app when I'm out and about. Also, I use Google Chrome, Youtube.
  • What are the main reasons for accessing these sites – for example, for information, to make purchases, communicate with friends or for entertainment?
I use these sites to communicate with my friends and to access information and also entertainment purposes. 
  • What different devices do you use to access the internet? What is your primary device for accessing the internet?
I use my phone, when accessing social media and the internet. However, I do use my laptop to do my homework,therefore, use the internet then.
  • What social networks do you use regularly (e.g. Twitter, Instagram)? Why do you belong to these networks in particular?
I use WhatsApp,Instagram and Snapchat most regularly as I use them to communicate with others.

Action plan
My action plan is to read more newspapers and watch more films at the cinema, not just at home. This will help me expand my media consumption.

Introduction

I choose media studies for A level because I'm hoping to go into journalism or something preferably with a media background. Media allows the world to connect in a way, we use media to gain knowledge about not only what goes on in our country, but all round the world. This is why i think media is an important subject to study. I hope to learn various things about media such as film making, social media, how to produce a magazine articles.

Although I have no practical experience with media and I didn't do it for GCSE, I feel that media is something that will help me with my future career. I am also doing English Literature and Sociology A level, which I also have a great interest in.
